It is a species that readily hybridize, resulting in numerous cultivars that appear in horticulture since 1990. In Mexico it is called "Myrtle mountains", or "myrtle of the mountains"

Microphylla Salvia is a much branched shrub that can reach 120 cm in height. The leaves are roughly oval with the smell of mint. The stems are hairy and may have a reddish color. The flowers, bright red oppositely arranged in elongated racemes up to 20 cm.

Taxonomy
The botanist Carl Epling Salvia microphylla has considered three alternatives, although the wide variation still causes confusion today. Salvia microphylla Salvia is often confused greggii, often with the hybrid. Epling distinguish between the two because the leaves of S. microphylla have jagged edges, as compared with narrow leaves, elliptical, smooth-edged S. greggii.
