Emusträucher

The Emusträucher (Eremophila) is an endemic Australian genus of the family of the Figwort (Scrophulariaceae).

Features

The representatives of this genus are small to medium sized shrubs, a few species are small trees. The leaves are alternate or against. Many species have gray, hairy leaves as radiation protection, others have leaves with a sticky surface evaporation protection.

The flowers are individually in leaf axils. Cup and crown are five parts. The cup is free, the petals are fused. The crown is tubular and curved.

The upper lip is usually two-, three-lobed lower lip. The flowers are rather large and often strikingly colored (white, cream, yellow, orange, red, pink, purple or brown), sometimes the cup.

Around three-quarters of the species are pollinated by insects (entomophily), others of birds (Ornithophily). The fruits are fleshy or dry fruit with one capsule to twelve seeds.

Dissemination

The Emusträucher are endemic to Australia. They grow mainly in the dry areas of Mulga in central and western Australia. Because of the presence of very poor soils, many representatives also poverty bush (shrub poverty are called).
