Paulownias

The paulownias (Paulownia) are a native to East Asia genus of seven species. They have long been considered one of the Figwort (Scrophulariaceae), but provide for newer methods of molecular biology findings, the only genus of the family alone Paulownia tomentosa plants (Paulowniaceae) dar.The genus was named in honor of the Russian princess Anna Pavlovna.

Description

The paulownias is deciduous or - in a tropical climate - Evergreen trees with smooth bark. The opposite, long-stalked leaves are undivided or slightly three-to five-lobed.

The inflorescence is a Thyrsus three to achtblütigen zymösen part inflorescences. The hermaphroditic, zygomorph flowers are usually 5-7 cm in length quite large. Paulownia fortunei has the largest flowers with 8 to 12 cm in length, the smallest Paulownia kawakamii with 3-5 cm length.

The five sepals are fused. The white to purple-colored, double lip is made up of five fused petals existing Three-lobed corolla with bilobed lower lip and upper lip. Inside are grown on the Corolla four stamens of the two longer and two shorter and do not protrude from the crown.

The oberständige, zweifächrige ovary bears at the head of the style, which is about as long as the stamens. Are formed fachspaltige fruit capsule containing numerous membranous winged seeds.

Dissemination

All species are native to the eastern and central China, three in Taiwan. One way of Paulownia fortunei is, in the south before to Laos and North Vietnam.

The Princess tree (Paulownia tomentosa), which in our best-known species, is in climatically wärmebegünstigten areas in Japan, Europe and North America, cultivated as an ornamental tree.
