Prumnopitys

Prumnopitys is a genus of conifers belonging to the family Podocarpaceae.The eight recognized species of Prumnopitys are dioecious, evergreen tree to 40 m tall. The leaves are similar to those of Taxus, strap-shaped, 1-4 cm long and 2-3 mm wide, with a soft texture.

The cones are one to five scales fertile, each with a single seed surrounded by fleshy scale tissue, resembling a drupe. These berry-like cone scales are eaten by birds that the seeds in their droppings.

The species are found on both sides of the Pacific Ocean, in eastern Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia, and along the mountains of eastern South America from Venezuela to Chile and Costa Rica.

This distribution indicates the origin of Prumnopitys in Antarctic fauna, from the humid temperate flora of southern Gondwana, an ancient super-continent evolved.
