Lardizabala

Lardizabala (Latin Lardizabala) - monotypic genus of the family Lardizabalaceae. The only kind - Lardizabala biternata - a perennial evergreen plants from Peru and Chile, cultivated for edible fruit.

It is a liana up to 3,5 m with a bright glossy green leathery leaves. In young plants the stems are soft, grassy, over time, they harden and woody.

The flowers are dark purple, almost black. Fruit - dark purple berry kolbasoobraznaya length of 5-8 cm with a sweet fleshy pulp. It is edible and is eaten raw and cooked.

The plant prefers sandy and loamy soils. It can withstand short-term decrease in temperature to -10 degrees Celsius.
